Siem Reap, Cambodia was one of my favorite trips and places to visit. What it is known for is Angkor Wat which was originally built in the first half of the 12th century as a Hindu Temple. Angkor Wat is considered to be the largest religious monument in the world and is one of the seven wonders of the world. It was originally dedicated to the Hundu god Vishnu, the temple became a Buddhist temple by the end of the 12th century.
Travelling far from home (Canada), I had several trips planned together. Usually I join tour groups. But I was told that I would be able to get around easily by hiring a Tuk Tuk, which is a motorcycle taxi. So I ended up touring solo. Luckily, I was fortunate to hire a dependable and honest driver- Mr. Thom. I had negotiated a fair daily rate (I don’t remember but it was around 30-40 USD) and he agreed to drive me wherever I wanted all day and would wait for me to finish my touring of the sites.
I had heard of some bad experiences with Tuk Tuks, that they would change prices, demanding more money. My brother had an experience of an attempted high speed mugging. Motorcycles would follow alongside the Tuk Tuks and grab your belongings that were not secured tight and speed off. Luckily they were not successful for my brother’s encounter.
Mr. Thom (my tuk tuk driver) seemed to be reliable, even had a compartment for securing belongings, warned me about thieves, and made recommendations on places to eat and go. I stayed at the Marriott- Le Méridien Angkor. The hotel was so nice, I did not want to leave.
I was only in Siem Reap for 3 days, I ended up doing as much as I could within the days. There were too many Temples to visit so I picked the most popular. I ended up going with the flow and explored a variety of activites.
I enjoyed visiting many temples to see the history and architecture- Angkor Wat- people head there to catch the sunrise. Phnom Bakheng is best to head there to watch the sunset. Ta Prohm is my favorite as it is very interesting. There was also Angkor Thom, Bayon, and Pre Rup that each have their own uniqueness.
Floating Village – Tonle Sap Lake. It was the afternoon and wasn’t too busy. Was able to see the crocodile farms
Shows- I was looking to get tickets for a Khmer boxing but I was late and not able to secure any. I ended up watching a circus and dance show.
Food- I did not find the food particularly special in Cambodia. Maybe I was not brought to a traditional restaurant. I stuck to the typical restaurants recommended as I was unsure of the cleanliness.
The War Museum in Siem Reap is the only War Museum in Cambodia. It has relic weapons and is kept in memory of the civil war in the history of Cambodia during the last 3 decades of the 20th century. I was told that there may be some active land mines and to stay on the path.
Siem Reap is one of the places I would like to visit again one day. As it is so unique, visiting it at least once is a must.

To get around, I had used a tuk tuk. With the Tuk Tuk, we agreed upon a
